English Mastiffs
At a time when large
predators still roamed the mountains and plains
of Central Asia and the Middle East, these
fierce guardians were invaluable. The
Assyrians depicted mastiffs in battle with lions. |
|
 |
Later
down the ages, Caesar describes finding fierce and powerful
Mastiff dogs fighting alongside their masters against the
Roman legions during the Roman invasion of Britain in 55
B.C. These dogs were brought back to Rome and used in
Gladiator fighting in the arena. Today, they are bred
to be non-aggressive, gentle and trustworthy. The Old
English Mastiff
or more properly the "English Mastiff" is exceptionally gentle around its family and friends, yet,
its menacing power and protectiveness can easily be realized
should the Mastiff's home or family be seriously threatened.
He is a super-loyal family dog. While
the breed is generally suspicious of strangers and politely
tolerant of friends, it becomes enamored with its human
family. |
|
The Mastiff belongs to the "Working Dog" class.
Though it's original job thousands of years ago
was assisting infantry in war, fighting and
guarding, over the years they have also
been given such tasks as cart pulling and
hunting big game. As with most breeds of
dogs the Mastiff breed standard is set forth to
ensure that future generations of Mastiffs will
remain structurally capable of doing their
original job. Though Mastiffs of today are
gentle giants and are unlikely to be pulling
carts or hunting they must still be bred to fit
that original design.
Our Mission
The joy of our lives is the love of our
Mastiffs. We believe that temperament,
health and conformation must be exceptional in
every breeding in order to better the breed.
Mastiffs, to us, should be massive. Our
goal in breeding is to produce huge, happy and
healthy Mastiffs of distinct quality.
